Furniture Drive for the MA Homeless a Success

Olympia Moving and Storage was proud to once again take part in the Furnish the Future drive to benefit the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless.  Over three days in November, Olympia picked up donated furniture all over western Massachusetts.  By the end of the drive, Olympia had filled 9 trucks up with donations from 85 furniture pick ups!

All the donated furniture goes to the coalition’s furniture bank in Lynn, MA.   This program gives furniture to formerly homeless families transitioning to permanent housing.  These donations fulfill basic needs and make a big difference in turning local families’ new houses into homes.   The MA Coalition for the Homeless has been running one of the largest furniture bank programs in the country for over 25 years.

Big thanks to our friends at the Greater Boston Association of Realtors who were our partners in this event.   Our VP of National Accounts, Mark McEwen, did a great job working with them to coordinate the drive.

Olympia is always interested in working with our business partners to help better our community.  Feel free to contact us if you’re looking for help with your next charitable event.

Olympia at Touch the Trucks

Here’s your dose of cute for the afternoon!  Crewmen Mircea Nutescu and Paul Sand and sales coordinator Erin King brought one of our best trucks to Watertown Family Network’s Touch the Trucks event on November 3rd in Watertown, MA.  This is a great family event where kids get the chance to see a variety of trucks in real life.  They had a great time; thanks to all the kids and parents who came out to see us!

A few of the most adorable pictures are below, but you can also check out the rest of the pictures at our Facebook album.  Don’t forget to “like” us on Facebook while you’re over there!

Furnish the Future Drive & Touch the Trucks Events

At Olympia Moving and Storage, we believe that it’s our responsibility to be involved with the communities in which we live and work.  In the coming weeks, we’ll be participating in two community events.

Furnish the Future Furniture Drive – November 13-15

The Greater Boston Association of Realtors (GBAR) is teaming up with Olympia Moving & Storage again this year to collect furniture for the Mass Coalition for the Homeless.    This event was put together by the GBAR’s service committee, chaired by Mary Crane, a friend to Olympia.  All the furniture collected will be going to the Coalition’s headquarters in Lynn, MA.  There, formerly homeless families can select furniture to make their new permanent residences feel like home.

If you want to donate furniture, e-mail [email protected] to schedule a truck to pick up your furniture between November 13, 14, or 15, or contact Mark McEwen at 617-231-1204.

For more information, visit the GBAR website.

We’re excited to participate in this opportunity to give back!

Olympia Moving supports the Walk to End Alzeheimer’s

It is important to us at Olympia Moving and Storage to be a contributing member of the Boston, MA and Washington, DC area communities.  In addition to the work we do with the area residents and businesses, we also embrace our work with many events and charities.

This weekend Olympia Moving is proud to be working with the Alzeheimer’s Association to put on the Walk to End Alzeheimer’s in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.  Between September 22-30, 11 walks will take place in the Boston, MA area to raise awareness and funds for care, support and research to fight this debilitating disease.  Our crews have been hard at work providing logistics help and delivering supplies to all 11 of the regional walks.

“Alzheimer’s disease is the largest underfunded public health threat facing our nation today, and it’s growing at an epidemic rate.  Today, more than half of all Americans know some with Alzheimer’s.  Soon, no one will be left untouched.”

To learn more about the Alzheimer’s association, visit http://www.alz.org

Hope to see you there, and be sure to say hi if you see one of our crew members!

Olympia MA Summer Party Challenge

It’s been a busy summer, but our crew sure knows how to have fun! Everyone’s competitive spirit came out to our Massachusetts crew’s annual summer party when we challenged them to build a floating boat with packing materials. We learned that as talented as our crews are at moving and assembling your furniture, cardboard boats, not so much!

You can check out the video below to see the amusing results, or check out the video at this link. While you’re there, be sure to “like” us on Facebook for more great content!

Back to School with Olympia Moving & Storage

Olympia helping students move in

Boston and Washington DC are home to some of the most prestigious universities in the country. For many years, Olympia has been a proud service partner for a number of these universities. Whether it’s relocating faculty and professors or moving offices, Olympia appreciates our role in assisting the educational institutions in our markets.

As the fall semester approaches, Olympia is gearing up for another year of moving students into their dorms. Move-in day is exciting and hectic, but Olympia helps to ensure the process goes smoothly. This year we’ll be helping students move in at Northeastern University, Boston College, and numerous others. It will be a big relief for many parents to see an Olympia crew member ready to help them unload when they pull up to their child’s dorm!

Olympia has also worked with College Boxes for the past decade. At the end of every school year, Olympia picks up thousands of student boxes from dorm rooms and keeps them in our storage facilities for the summer. When the students return for the fall semester, they will find their boxes waiting for them in their new dorm room, already delivered by Olympia.

Best of luck to all the Boston and DC area students for a successful fall semester! Study hard!

Hiring, Training & Retaining Great People

At Olympia Moving & Storage, we understand that each and every employee we hire is a reflection of who we are.  We look for movers who are good communicators, accountable for their actions, and interested in becoming leaders within the organization.

MoversAfter making it through the interview process, new employees are put through a rigorous two week training program.  This program focuses on both classroom exercises and technical training.  During this time, crew members learn everything from the proper technique for protecting an antique piece of furniture to customer service skills.

Upon graduation, new crew members are paired with more experienced personnel, so their development can continue in the field.  The expectation is that these employees will become capable of managing their own crews in time.

Job visits are completed by Olympia’s staff in order to gauge client satisfaction and ensure the consistency of the service we are providing.  Monthly claims reports and client satisfaction surveys inform the ongoing training and act as an objective measure of performance.  These numbers also provide the basis for selecting the employee of the month in each office location.

Every year Olympia makes a significant investment in its personnel; an investment that has paid significant dividends for our clients.  We are extremely proud of the service we provide and the people that make this a great company to work for.

Building a Culture of Success

A successful relocation requires infrastructure, training, and seamless internal and external communication.  Every day the Olympia team makes a commitment to “getting it right,” and then does everything within our power to live up to this commitment. Pride of performance and accountability are the foundations upon which our company was built.

Following are some of the areas that distinguish Olympia from the rest of the moving industry:

People:  Olympia places significant emphasis on identifying and retaining a great team of people.  Ultimately our systems, processes and technology are only as good as the people that make the business run.  Olympia retains Josh Croteau to manage our recruiting.

Olympia Moving VansEquipment/Technology: Olympia is committed to outfitting our crews and office staff with the right tools for the job.  All of our salespeople are provided with tablet pc’s, mobile printers, and wifi enabled smartphones.

Processes/Systems: Given that we will facilitate close to 4,000 relocations in 2012, it is imperative that we adhere to specific processes and protocols so that each and every client can expect outstanding service.

Training: Perhaps the single biggest factor differentiating us from the competition is Olympia’s continual investment in our people.  Regardless of prior experience, Olympia’s crew members receive significant front-end training, in addition to ongoing career development.

Communication: Communication is integral to building a successful company culture.  Customer feedback is filtered directly to the crew members in order to assist and inform their ongoing training.

While building and maintaining a positive culture is a never-ending process, we feel that we are on the right track.   In 2011, more than 95% of survey respondents indicated that they would recommend our services to family and friends.
