The best social media buzz on Allston Christmas 2019

In Boston, the end of summer is marked by a city-wide holiday. No, not Labor Day. September 1st is Allston Christmas, the day that 79% of leases turn over in the city, resulting in a gridlock of moving trucks and sidewalks littered with abandoned trash. As a Boston moving company, the folks at Olympia Moving & Storage are Allston Christmas experts. We have 25 of of them under our belt. This year we teamed up with NBC 10 Boston to educate the city about the dangers of driving a moving truck on Storrow Drive.

Per usual, Boston’s residents took to Twitter and Instagram to share their moving pains, celebrate their curbside finds, and ask the void – what the heck is going on out there?

The Best Tweets & Instagrams of Allston Christmas 2019

Allston Christmas is a holiday highly anticipated across the city

The season was ushered in with carols

Some tried to avoid moving in Boston altogether

Not sure which was more coveted this year, a new coffee table on the sidewalk, or these two excellent beer releases by Harpoon Brewery and Trillium Brewing

Sleighs & rental trucks took to the streets to spread good cheer

Not all Allston Christmas finds are merry, some are better left for Allston Christmas Boxing Day

When your Allston Christmas move is over, just remember that moving companies have to go through this every day. Olympia contributed to Boston Magazine’s compilation of funny and touching stories from Boston moving companies.

Happy Allston Christmas 2018 from the Bostonians of Twitter & Instagram

The most wonderful time of the year is here again! The signs of the season are everywhere: old mattresses piled on the sidewalks, gridlocked streets filled with rental trucks, and a near-crash for a truck on Storrow Drive. Olympia Moving & Storage is still in the midst of our busiest weekend of the year. In addition to the 40 moves we’re completing daily, you can find us working on the Northeastern campus, moving thousands of new and returning students into their dorms.

Whether you were moving with Olympia or not, we wanted to help everyone have a merry Boston moving day. We posted PSAs on the back of the iconic Olympia trucks, reminding drivers that they can NOT bring trucks onto Storrow Drive. Olympia also created an Allston Christmas survival guide, with advice from the experts to make a September 1st move a success. Olympia has conquered over 25 Allston Christmases, so we know how to navigate the chaos.

With 79% of Boston leases turning over on the same date, it certainly is chaos. According the Boston Globe, more than 138,000 students return to the city and about 2,000 U-Hauls will be on the road this weekend. You can count on the citizens of Boston to document the experience.

As another September 1st Boston Move In Day (a.k.a. Allston Christmas) comes to an end, the team at Olympia Moving & Storage is taking a collective sigh of relief. While today, when 79% of Boston’s leases turn over, means moving chaos for the city, for moving companies Labor Day weekend marks the end of the high volume summer season. We anticipate continuing our hard work through the rest of the year, but Olympia Moving & Storage is looking forward to a moment of R&R after working at capacity all summer!

Meanwhile, the rest of Boston is not used to moving being an integral part of their daily lives, and took to Twitter and Instagram this week to complain, meme, and post their curbside finds. Although a weekend of gridlocked moving trucks is annoying, the results are certainly entertaining!

Boston Moving Company Partners with Flutter to Give Away Free Allston Christmas Move

The notorious Boston moving date, September 1st, is just around the corner. Nicknamed “Allston Christmas,” September 1st is the date when 79% of Boston’s leases begin. This move date is infamous in Boston, the roads are jammed with moving and rental trucks and the streets are flooded with abandoned belongings. In an effort to make this miserable moving day a bit brighter for one Boston resident, Olympia Moving & Storage is teaming up with Flutter, an online fund-raising platform. A $8 donation to Special Olympics Massachusetts via Flutter gives Bostonians the chance to win the Allston Christmas gift of a free move on September 1st.

“Having run the @BostonTweet Twitter account for 8 years I know how popular and dreaded September 1st is in the city,” says Flutter founder Tom O’Keefe. “I thought partnering with Olympia Moving to make moving easier for someone would be very timely and help raise a lot of money for the Special Olympics Massachusetts.”

Flutter was created by Tom O’Keefe last year as a way to get more people involved with charitable donations, regardless of their income. The idea was to create the opposite of an auction and give everyone the chance to win a prize for donating to charity regardless of their financial wealth. So far they have raised almost $70,000 for Boston-area charities.

“We’re very excited to be partnering with Flutter for this Free Move for Allston Christmas contest,” says Michael Gilmartin, President of Olympia Moving & Storage. “Flutter has raised thousands of dollars for local charities, and it’s an innovative way to raise funds for another partner of Olympia’s, Special Olympics Massachusetts.”

Special Olympics Massachusetts was the natural choice to benefit from this campaign, as Olympia Moving & Storage has been a corporate sponsor of the organization since 2013. Olympia Moving & Storage provides free logistics services for Special Olympics’ competitions and fundraisers, and contributed over $50,000 in monetary and in-kind donations to Special Olympics athletes last year.

Boston residents can enter to win the free move via Flutter’s website, at https://www.experienceflutter.com/experiences/merry-allston-christmas.

Olympia Moving Delivers Toys to the Big Wishes Gift Drive

Congrats to Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage of New England for filling TWO Olympia Moving & Storage trucks full of gifts and toys for The Home for Little Wanderers Big Wishes Gift Drive!

The generous agents & communities around Coldwell Banker offices collected the thousands of gifts including laptops and bikes!  The gifts will go to needy families in the Boston area in The Home’s care, making their holiday seasons a little brighter.

Olympia Moving & Storage donates logistics assistance to the drive every year, picking up the gifts from the Coldwell Banker offices and delivering to the Home for Little Wanderer’s Toy Room in Rosindale.  Coldwell Banker has filled an Olympia Moving truck with gifts every year, so our crew was pleasantly surprised to discover that the gift drive would require two trucks this year!

We got this note of thanks from the Facilities Coordinator at Coldwell Banker:

We want to thank you for your help again with this year’s toy drive! As you probably know, this year we had two full trucks of toys to donate (the most ever!) and it would not have been possible without Olympia’s help! Deb even said that we donated more toys than Walmart and Bernie & Phyl’s. There will be a lot of happy children this Holiday season! Again, thank you for everything you do for CBRB and Happy Holiday’s!

We hope the families that receive these will have a brighter Christmas! More on Olympia Moving & Storage’s community involvement:

Olympia Moving President Interviewed for IAM The Portal Magazine

Olympia Moving IAM The PortalOlympia Moving & Storage has always put an emphasis on technology to drive our growth and the moving experience for our clients. Two years ago, Olympia Moving switched our internal moving management system to Moveware. Although Moveware had not yet entered the market in the United States, Olympia Moving was eager to be their first American client in order to have first access to the technology.

Although the transition was time-intensive and challenging, it was worthwhile for the vast improvements of Olympia Moving’s internal efficiency, closing of information gaps between departments, and ability to track every detail of the client experience.

Moveware

Every Olympia Moving client has an extensive move file in Moveware, which tracks every detail, document, change, and conversation with our clients and prompts almost a dozen proactive contact points from our staff with each client, ensuring that each client receives exceptional communication throughout the entire process.

Externally, Moveware has allowed for amazing access and transparency for our clients through the Olympia Move Portal, which allows clients to log directly into our move management system to view and manage their move’s details and documents.

After two years of implementing and improving the Moveware system, Olympia Moving & Storage is confident that they provide one of the best technology-driven moving experiences of any local and interstate mover in the industry. The innovation at Olympia Moving never stops, our team continues to work with Moveware daily to make improvements to the system and roll out new features to their staff and clients.

IAM The Portal, the bi-monthly magazine of the International Association of Movers, interviewed Michael Gilmartin, President of Olympia Moving & Storage, about the challenges of implementing new technology in the relocation industry.

Click here to read the article on page 73

IAM asked Michael his advice for other moving & storage companies considering new software. They also asked him about Olympia Moving’s future in regards to technology. Michael’s response:

“The moving industry has traditionally been somewhat of a laggard in that area, which is great for us from a competitive standpoint. I feel we are now where the rest of the industry hopes to be in 10 years, and we will continue to push and to innovate around technology. We have a great team, and we now have a system to support us fully.”
