19 Lessons from Allston Christmas 2013

Another Allston Christmas has come come and gone. The year, the infamous Boston moving weekend was even tougher due to high temperatures, rain, and humidity, but our Olympia crew managed to pull off successful moves for our clients!

Some other relocating Boston residents did not have such an easy time. If you’re moving next September 1st, they say the best way to learn is from others’ mistakes & experiences. Here’s 19 things we learned from Allston Christmas 2013.

1. Double or triple parking will not help anyone.

Olympia Continues Work With Alzheimer’s Association

995710_10153020635145725_150788514_nOlympia Moving & Storage is entering our second year in partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association of New England.

Each year the Alzheimer’s Association holds two great events – The Walk to End Alzheimer’s and the RUN TRI RIDE to End Alzheimer’s.

Our friendly Olympia crew is always well-received by both Alzheimer’s Association employees and volunteers as well as participants in their events.

We just completed the RUN TRI RIDE event a few weeks ago. Event coordinator Angela Floro had the following to say:

“Olympia Moving has been a tremendous partner with the Alzheimer’s Association fundraising events. In July, Olympia Moving helped with our Ride to End Alzheimer’s. This event is a one day cycling event and we had a record breaking year with 450 cyclists and we are entering our goal of $500,000! We truly could not have put on this event without Lou and his crew. They were outstanding in every way. Thank you for your support!”

We are looking forward to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s event next month in September. Events take place throughout New England. Please consider joining the event…and say hello to Olympia while you are there! http://www.alz.org/manh

Olympia Raises $4,390 for Special Olympics MA!

Olympia Moving & Storage Over the EdgeOn Friday, Michael Gilmartin, president of Olympia Moving & Storage, conquered his fear of heights and rappelled down a 22-story hotel in Boston, MA in support of Special Olympics athletes.

Michael and Olympia Moving & Storage were participating in Special Olympics Massachusetts’ Over the Edge event. This unique fundraising event gives participants who raise at least $1,000 the chance to rappel down the Hyatt Regency in downtown Boston.

This is Special Olympics Massachusetts’ third annual Over the Edge event, and the first Over the Edge event for Olympia Moving & Storage.

Olympia asked for contributions from friends, family, business partners, and fellow Wheaton | Bekins agents. We shattered our goal of $3,000 and raised a total of $4,390 for Special Olympics athletes and programs!

Michael was a bit apprehensive about going Over the Edge. “I have a fear of heights, so it took some convincing to commit me to Over the Edge. Seeing everyone pitch in for Special Olympics motivated me. The toughest part was letting go of the safety rail at the top of the building, but after that, it was actually fun. Thank you so much to all our contributors, I wouldn’t have done this rappel for a cause any less worthy than Special Olympics Massachusetts!”

Olympia Moving & Storage is a proud corporate partner for Special Olympics Massachusetts. We contribute year-round to the organization with in-kind donations of crews & trucks for events, corporate fundraising, employee volunteerism, and more. Olympia Donates to Special Olympics MA Summer Games

Olympia Moving & Storage was proud to be a sponsor for Special Olympics Massachusetts’ Summer Games. The Games took place over the weekend of June 7-9, 2013 at Harvard Stadium, and as the organization’s official logistics supplier, Olympia crews and volunteers worked hard to make the Games a success.

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training, athletic competition and other health-related programming for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Olympia Moving & Storage contributes year-round to Special Olympics; including donations of crews & trucks for events, corporate fundraising, and employee volunteerism.  You can learn more about this partnership at olympiamoving.com/specialolympics

Throughout the week leading up to the Games, Olympia picked up supplies and equipment from Special Olympics’ vendors for delivery at the venue. Olympia also kept trucks and crew on hand for Special Olympics for logistics during the Games.

Before the Summer Games’ opening ceremonies, Olympia crews greeted over 2,000 athletes as they arrived and moved them into their dorms at Boston University.

On Saturday, many Olympia employees volunteered a part of their weekend to guide the track & field athletes through their events at the Games.

On the last day of the Games, Sunday, Olympia Moving & Storage moved the athletes out of their dorms and organized their bags for easy pick up on their way home.

All these services were provided to Special Olympics Massachusetts free of charge.

Mary Beth McMahon, President of Special Olympics MA, e-mailed Olympia after the event: “I cannot thank you enough for what you guys and your team did for us this weekend. We rely so heavily on volunteers in every aspect and the work your team did this weekend helping our Coaches have a much easier time with the move in and move out and our Games Management Team help to work more efficiently and effectively with logistics is really priceless. We have received such positive comments about everything you helped us with and we will make sure we share all of the great feedback.”

Matt Ruxton, VP of Sports Management, added: “I can’t begin to explain how much it helped to have you guys on site and all your help during our advance week. I think ‘Just awesome’ sums it up.”

When Boston-Area Students Take a Break – Olympia Heats Up!

Give 'N Go
Olympia manned the Give N’ Go stations on the Bentley University campus

Summer is the season when students from local schools, colleges and universities take time off to relax before next year…but for Olympia Office Movers, our “busy season” begins!

Each summer Olympia spends a significant amount of time in Boston area schools and on campuses assisting staff with renovations, special projects or moves. As usual, this year runs the gamut!

For full school moves, Olympia will be assisting Harborlight-Stoneridge Montessori School move and decommission the existing Stoneridge campus in Beverly to merge it with the Harborlight campus.

As for special projects, Olympia is proud to assist Bentley University this year with their Give ‘N Go program. Olympia is helping to collect unwanted items from departing students and deliver them to local charities.

Of course, many ask about one of our biggest projects of the year – the Northeastern University Move In and Move Out assistance. At the end of each school year, and the beginning of the next, Olympia sends a small army of our Boston movers to assist the students and parents with the loading/unloading process.

Olympia helps all sides on move for Boston non-profit

Root Cause
Root Cause is sharing their excitement about their new space on their Facebook

Root Cause is a non-profit research and consulting firm that works to advance solutions to today’s toughest social issues. They also recently selected Olympia Moving & Storage to relocate their corporate offices from Cambridge to Boston.

Olympia did double duty for this job. Root Cause decided to purchase new furniture from local furniture vendor National Premier Partners, who in turn hired Olympia to deliver and install the new workstations, seating, and conference furniture.

Olympia used our own in-house installation team to set up the new work spaces from National Premier Partners.

Upon successful completion of the move, Root Cause realized there was a substantial amount of old furniture and items that no longer had value. Olympia was hired again, this time to provide Disposal Services using our partnerships with local recycling centers.

Root Cause is now comfortably in their new space, enjoying their new furniture, and Olympia Moving & Storage was happy we could help on many levels! Says Tania Green, Root Cause’s Marketing and Communications Manager, “The Olympia team far exceeded our expectations; their thorough communication, flexibility, and friendly movers make the experience hassle-free. We were able to focus on the excitement of moving to a new space rather than the stress of getting there.”

Do you need help preparing for an office move or another type of commercial move? Please feel free to contact Rob Weeks in commercial business development at [email protected] or visit this link to set up a free estimate.  We’d welcome the opportunity to discuss our services with you.

Things to Consider when Moving to or from Boston

In contrast to the suburbs such as Newton or Wellesley, moving in or out of Boston can be a logistical challenge.  Tight streets in the North End, Beacon Hill, Charlestown and the South End require special parking permits and are inaccessible to larger trucks.  It is imperative that you work with a company that is familiar with these areas in order to avoid unwanted surprises.  Plan ahead so that the necessary permits can be obtained well in advance of your move date.

Boston MovingStairs and tight spaces are a way of life in the Boston Metro Area; and Olympia earned its reputation by proving that we could efficiently and safely operate in these conditions.  When items will not fit, hand-hoisting and/or craning are the two available options.  Both of these require advanced planning and we suggest contacting your move coordinator if you feel this may be applicable to your move.

Given all of the colleges and universities in the immediate vicinity of Boston, and the many apartment moves happening in the first weekend of the month, timing is relevant.   If possible, we suggest avoiding moving at the end of August or beginning of September when all of the students are moving back to school. Boston effectively becomes a parking lot during this time which can result in unwanted delays.  If you MUST move during this timeframe, make sure that you schedule your relocation as early as possible.   Olympia operates on a first come first serve basis, and typically the end of August books out 4-6 weeks in advance.

Hiring Packing Services

At Olympia Moving and Storage, we understand that preparation and packing are critical ingredients of a successful move.  To this end, we invest hundreds of hours training our staff on best practices every year.  Whether you require the luxury of a full packing service, or are simply interested in having our team pack some of your fragile items, we are confident that we can address your specific needs.

Full Packing Services

Olympia’s full packing service allows you to focus on the myriad of other details associated with relocating your home.  Our crews work as a team, carefully packing, labeling, disassembling, and preparing each room for moving day.

Partial Packing Services

Partial packing services typically involves Olympia Moving and Storage handling the most fragile items; such as stemware, china and pictures.  We also use this as an opportunity to ensure that your residence is fully prepared so that we can expedite the moving process.

Unpacking Services

There is so much effort and planning that goes into moving, that boxes often are left packed weeks and even months after the move date. Olympia’s unpacking services help you get a jump start on settling into your new home and include box and debris removal.

Benefits of Using Packing and Unpacking Services

Some of the benefits of having Olympia Moving assist you with the packing and unpacking process include:

  • A more efficient (and less costly) relocation based upon the fact that your residence will be fully prepared for the arrival of our moving team.
  • Peace of mind that your belongings will be properly packed and protected.
  • An expedited and consolidated time frame for completion.
  • Minimizing time taken away from work and family.
  • Reducing the stress associated with your move.
  • Ensuring that your boxed items are fully covered from a liability standpoint.
  • Limiting the time in which your household (and lives) are in transition mode.
  • Better organization on the front and back end of the relocation process.
