Project Managers Are Back For More!

Doug & Despina from our commercial moving department with Gretchen Griffin of Lend Lease at the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Olympia Office Movers in Alexandria, VA recently completed a large hotel project on Fort Myer and are set to assist with a similar project on Fort Belvoir.

The project manager for both projects stated that “Olympia’s installers and movers are the best I have ever had in my 22 years in this industry…We know that our larger and more complex project at Ft. Belvoir will be a smooth as our first with Olympia.”

Fort Belvoir is set to renovate a 164 room hotel, which will serve as rooms for families of our men and women in the Army. This renovation will give families of our servicemen adequate housing while they visit their loved ones on base.

Do you need help preparing for a renovation or another type of commercial move? Please feel free to contact Despina Sidiropoulos in commercial business development at [email protected] or visit this link to set up a free estimate.  We’d welcome the opportunity to discuss our services with you.

Smart Packing with Adam of Benezra Boxes

Benezra BoxesWhen it comes to moving, Adam Benezra, entrepreneur and owner of Benezra Boxes, is an expert. He was a mover for Gentle Giant for four years, but even after a back injury, Adam wasn’t ready to leave the moving industry.  Instead, he started his own business.

Says Adam “At the time, recycling was really gaining steam and using used moving boxes wasn’t anything new.  I just decided to market it more aggressively and also add my moving knowledge to help give customers free advice.”

Benezra Boxes was born.  Fifteen years later Adam still maintains his business in Winchester, MA.   Benezra Boxes focuses on picking up and selling used moving boxes.  Adam also leverages his industry expertise to offer relocation management services.  Customers who utilize Adam’s service can sit back and let Adam plan their move and procure estimates, as well as managing their packing.

When our clients ask us how to get obtain or get rid of used boxes we know to send them to Adam. It’s great to see someone conquer this needed niche in the moving industry.

How did you come up with the idea of Benezra Boxes?

“When I was a kid, I was raised by my aunt and uncle and my aunt started the recycling program in Melrose. And my uncle was always encouraging me to start my own business, they were very supportive.”

Olympia Raises $4,390 for Special Olympics MA!

Olympia Moving & Storage Over the EdgeOn Friday, Michael Gilmartin, president of Olympia Moving & Storage, conquered his fear of heights and rappelled down a 22-story hotel in Boston, MA in support of Special Olympics athletes.

Michael and Olympia Moving & Storage were participating in Special Olympics Massachusetts’ Over the Edge event. This unique fundraising event gives participants who raise at least $1,000 the chance to rappel down the Hyatt Regency in downtown Boston.

This is Special Olympics Massachusetts’ third annual Over the Edge event, and the first Over the Edge event for Olympia Moving & Storage.

Olympia asked for contributions from friends, family, business partners, and fellow Wheaton | Bekins agents. We shattered our goal of $3,000 and raised a total of $4,390 for Special Olympics athletes and programs!

Michael was a bit apprehensive about going Over the Edge. “I have a fear of heights, so it took some convincing to commit me to Over the Edge. Seeing everyone pitch in for Special Olympics motivated me. The toughest part was letting go of the safety rail at the top of the building, but after that, it was actually fun. Thank you so much to all our contributors, I wouldn’t have done this rappel for a cause any less worthy than Special Olympics Massachusetts!”

Olympia Moving & Storage is a proud corporate partner for Special Olympics Massachusetts. We contribute year-round to the organization with in-kind donations of crews & trucks for events, corporate fundraising, employee volunteerism, and more. Avoid becoming this person!  From XKCD

After the movers leave, setting up your new home may be daunting, but that’s where the fun can begin!

Before you start unpacking, consider some ideas to make a fresh start.  These post-move organization tips will help you save space and create a beautiful, practical home.

Utilize Your Movers

One of the best ways to jump start organization is a bit of pre-move planning.  Create a floor plan of the placement of your furniture in the new house.  There are some fantastic, free online tools to assist you.  This plan will allow you to direct the movers to place the furniture in the perfect spot on delivery day.  Remember, if you’re moving locally the charges are by the hour, so your advance plan will save you and the movers from time-consuming and expensive feng shui experimentation!

Unpack

You’re in your new home and the truck is empty, but there’s still a lot to be done.  Unpacking can be a daunting prospect, especially if you just packed!  Did you know that your mover may offer unpacking services?   Olympia can jump start the settling into your new home and remove those pesky boxes with our unpacking services.

Olympia Moving & Storage was proud to be a sponsor for Special Olympics Massachusetts’ Summer Games. The Games took place over the weekend of June 7-9, 2013 at Harvard Stadium, and as the organization’s official logistics supplier, Olympia crews and volunteers worked hard to make the Games a success.

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training, athletic competition and other health-related programming for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Olympia Moving & Storage contributes year-round to Special Olympics; including donations of crews & trucks for events, corporate fundraising, and employee volunteerism.  You can learn more about this partnership at olympiamoving.com/specialolympics

Throughout the week leading up to the Games, Olympia picked up supplies and equipment from Special Olympics’ vendors for delivery at the venue. Olympia also kept trucks and crew on hand for Special Olympics for logistics during the Games.

Before the Summer Games’ opening ceremonies, Olympia crews greeted over 2,000 athletes as they arrived and moved them into their dorms at Boston University.

On Saturday, many Olympia employees volunteered a part of their weekend to guide the track & field athletes through their events at the Games.

On the last day of the Games, Sunday, Olympia Moving & Storage moved the athletes out of their dorms and organized their bags for easy pick up on their way home.

All these services were provided to Special Olympics Massachusetts free of charge.

Mary Beth McMahon, President of Special Olympics MA, e-mailed Olympia after the event: “I cannot thank you enough for what you guys and your team did for us this weekend. We rely so heavily on volunteers in every aspect and the work your team did this weekend helping our Coaches have a much easier time with the move in and move out and our Games Management Team help to work more efficiently and effectively with logistics is really priceless. We have received such positive comments about everything you helped us with and we will make sure we share all of the great feedback.”

Matt Ruxton, VP of Sports Management, added: “I can’t begin to explain how much it helped to have you guys on site and all your help during our advance week. I think ‘Just awesome’ sums it up.”

Move-Out & Renovations Assistance at DC-Area Universities

Olympia Office Movers have hit the ground running this season with projects at several DC-area universities.

With finals behind our area college students, the last step before a beach-filled summer was the move out of their dorms. Olympia was there to assist.

Our Washington DC moving crews were all over the campuses of Catholic, Georgetown, Howard, American, Loyola, and Johns Hopkins Universities as well as University of Maryland.

Services to the students included the pickup of their boxes direct from the dorms, which were then transported to our secured warehouse for the summer. When the summer winds down, we will be meeting each student with their boxes before the new school year begins.

Noted Georgetown University freshman Abagail C, “This service is great! I am from New Jersey and don’t have room in my Civic for all my items. I will definitely use Olympia again.”

At American University, Olympia assisted with the removal of old dorm furniture at Letts Hall. 120 rooms were cleared and prepped for a much-needed renovation this summer. All the furniture is destined for Haiti, where it will be used in schools, churches, and hospitals.

When Boston-Area Students Take a Break – Olympia Heats Up!

Give 'N Go
Olympia manned the Give N’ Go stations on the Bentley University campus

Summer is the season when students from local schools, colleges and universities take time off to relax before next year…but for Olympia Office Movers, our “busy season” begins!

Each summer Olympia spends a significant amount of time in Boston area schools and on campuses assisting staff with renovations, special projects or moves. As usual, this year runs the gamut!

For full school moves, Olympia will be assisting Harborlight-Stoneridge Montessori School move and decommission the existing Stoneridge campus in Beverly to merge it with the Harborlight campus.

As for special projects, Olympia is proud to assist Bentley University this year with their Give ‘N Go program. Olympia is helping to collect unwanted items from departing students and deliver them to local charities.

Of course, many ask about one of our biggest projects of the year – the Northeastern University Move In and Move Out assistance. At the end of each school year, and the beginning of the next, Olympia sends a small army of our Boston movers to assist the students and parents with the loading/unloading process.

May is National Moving Month!

Olympia Moving CrewHappy National Moving Month from Olympia Moving & Storage!

May kicks off the summer moving season.  Due to school vacation and good weather, the majority of moves take place from May through September.

Movers have a lot to celebrate this May.  Over 36 million Americans relocated in 2012, and the 2013 moving season is expected to be even busier.  Thanks to organizations like the American Moving & Storage Association, the industry has made great progress protecting consumers by weeding out “rogue” movers and helping relocating Americans find not just reputable companies, but companies that will deliver a great experience.  Many movers are also planning for the future.  By integrating mobile phones, tablets, and web resources into the relocation process, moving companies are making your move more efficient and a better customer experience.

Here at the Olympia offices it’s no question that moving season has arrived!  The phones are ringing off the hook and the schedule is quickly booking up.

Every summer our staff works long hours to accommodate as many Olympia customers as possible.  As we transition into the moving season, we always like to remind our customers of a few key steps they can take to ensure their move is executed as planned:

1. Plan Early

Contact Olympia early in the process to ensure availability.  Each company only has so many trucks and crew members available, so the most coveted moving dates can fill up as far as a month in advance!  If you’re moving at the beginning or end of the month, pay special attention to this tip, as those dates are the first to reach capacity.

2.  Protect Your Move

While there are several excellent moving companies in Greater Boston & Washington DC areas, there are also a host of bad movers. Your clients should understand that when it comes to moving, price and value are not synonymous.  Make sure the moving company you select is registered, licensed, and insured on protectyourmove.gov.  You can also check that the moving company is reputable by checking out their BBB.org profile.

3.  Use Resources

To mitigate stress, utilize Olympia’s extensive moving resource center to guide you through every step of the relocation process.  You can find dozens of articles and videos on every moving-related topic, including moving tips, packing tips, choosing a mover, and protecting your move.

4.  Communicate

Effective communication, planning, and preparation are essential to a successful move.  Keep in touch with your move coordinator as you have questions and changes for your move.  It’s important to give as much notice as possible for changes in the move plan, such as shifting dates, adding extra stops, large changes in the size of your shipment, and requesting packing help.
